Tips for Designing a Kitchen
-- Establish the overall layout and space
-- Measure and sketch floor and walls
-- Determine the size and placement of the workhorses of your kitchen:
-- Sink will be decided according to the plumbing. Many people like to center under a window. You will probably have a few choice for sink base sizes.
-- If you're including a dishwasher, it will need to be placed next to the sink.
-- Consider your options for cooking
appliances, whether you want a range or wall oven/cooktop, whether you want a microwave and if it go above range or set in base cabinet.
-- The fridge can be tricky. Many choose
to place it at the end of a run, it can be
recessed into a wall, build a wall of cabinets around it, or build into design
with graduated wall cabinets.
-- These components don't need to be decided
for sure, but at least know options.
-- Plan base cabinets first. Start with corner.
At this point your choices will be limited, so it will probably, naturely fall into place.
The main thing is to make sure you have
"landing spots" near each appliance.
-- Wall cabinets are usually even across the
bottoms but you can create interest by
varying the heights and depths.
-- If you have a choice between number of
doors, the fewer and the more uniform, the better is looks (and is usually cheaper, too.)
-- Any aisles need AT LEAST 36".

CAUTION!
All walls are not created equal!
Keep in mind when measuring your space that, even in
new construction, the width near the floor may vary from the width near the ceiling. The depth from the
corner may be different, too. Measure in all directions.
Accuracy is very important at this initial step. So, as the
saying goes....
MEASURE TWICE, CUT ONCE.
